Tips To Treat Meningitis

| April 12, 2016

Meningitis is a kind of infection of the brain and spinal cord caused by various infectious agents like streptococci and meningococcal viral bacteria. All these infections may start from anywhere else in the body and they migrate towards the brain and affect. The period for meningitis is about two to four days so it has an early onset compared to other diseases.

If your doctor suspects you have meningitis, he will likely put you on a round dose of some antibiotics to fight potential non-viral types of infectious meningitis. If the antibiotics are effective, you’ll need to be in hospital for about a week. However, if you’re severely ill, you may need to stay in hospital for several weeks or even months. Bacterial meningitis symptoms develop suddenly. They may include:

altered mental status

nausea

vomiting

a sensitivity to light

irritability

a headache

a fever

a stiff neck

Viral meningitis is the most common form. Usually viruses that enter your body through your mouth before going to your brain and multiplying cause it. Antibiotics cannot kill viruses. However, intravenous fluids will be given to help the body recover. In very severe cases, where someone is in hospital with viral meningitis, anti-viral medicines may be given. Most of the time, people recover from their viral meningitis in seven to 10 days, with little more than rest

Symptoms of Viral meningitis in infants may be:

decreased appetite

irritability

sleepiness

lethargy

a fever

In adults, viral meningitis symptoms may be:

headaches

a fever

stiff neck

seizures

sensitivity to bright light

sleepiness

lethargy

nausea

decreased appetite
